7 Days. 7 Photos.

Posted in: KJ's Blog by KJ on January 8th, 2012

I’ve heard all kinds of chat about documenting 2012 by taking one photo a day. I like this idea – it encourages you to look more at stuff. But the downside is that committing to anything every day for a whole year could just end up being annoying, like most resolutions. And especially in a leap year – that extra day in February might just tip me over the edge. So, in order to take part and reap the rewards without the commitment, I’m just going to cheat. Every week I’ll post 7 photos, but they wont be day specific. Just 7 photos from that week. I’ll try keep it nice and interesting and hopefully I’ll end up with 366 pics at the end of 2012. Well, we’ll see how we go…

A mini label biography…

Posted in: Features & Projects, KJ's Blog by KJ on May 18th, 2010

…in the form of a face melting sunblaze.

I’ve had a little subconscious thing for patchwork for a moment, probably because I grew up with a Mum who was always making things like that. A few years ago I inherited her sewing box alongside her full set of 70′s Cordon Bleu recipe books as a ‘rights-of-passage’ type of thing. To be honest I thought sewing and stuff was as boring as hell when I was younger, it’s only recently that I’ve become interested in the idea that patchwork holds hidden stories; in part through design and in part by the origin of it’s bits.

Amongst my Mum’s sewing things, I found a diamond-shaped metal template. She’d used it to cut out pieces of our old clothes to make a traditional sunburst piece that hung in the kitchen like for ever. It started me thinking about making my own sun’blaze’ and how doing that would make a mini-label biography. And I liked that. Thus ‘The Re-Edit’ was born – a piece greater than the sum of it’s parts. Here’s some of the origins of a few of those bits…

Plus one product shoot:

Then some colabs, first the Strawberry 59Fifty made for New Era Sessions:

Then the girls Methodzip female artist piece for Addict – photo by Ethel:

Add a favourite typographic tee:

And finish with a new feature, the roll sleeve print:

Cut it all up, rearrange et voila! One Re-Edit design:

Girls World: GOLDIELOCKS

Posted in: Features & Projects, KJ's Blog by KJ on May 8th, 2010

Goldielocks aka Sarah Louise Akwisombe is a singer, producer and DJ from London. Known for creating her own unique electronic, dubstep influenced sound, she both produces her own beats as well as singing and rapping over them. She’s known for flying the flag for independent music and is a big one for doing things her own way, choosing to take the alternative and, let’s be honest, harder route rather than conform to the commercial rulebook. She recently launched her own record label ‘Gut Instinct Records’ with her first release being her own EP ‘I’m Not Her’.

The Re-Edit Launch

Posted in: KJ's Blog by KJ on May 7th, 2010

At Not Bad For A Girl HQ we’ve been busy bees. We decided it was time for a spring-clean, a touch of ‘out with the old and in with the new!’ So, for our latest edition, we’ve taken elements of our classic designs and reworked them to create a mini-biographical-patchwork in the form of ‘The Re-Edit’ tee. To celebrate the official launch, we asked the amazing Goldielocks and Sri McKinnon to step up, rock the tees and answer our favourite five questions. Keep em peeled for the interviews coming shortly…
